Spring always brings a fresh sense of possibility. The air feels lighter, flowers bloom, and mornings arrive with birds chirping sometimes hours before the alarm even goes off. But for many people, this seasonal shift can disrupt sleep more than they realise.
When the sun rises earlier and evenings stretch out longer, your body clock has to adjust. The brain takes its cues from light, and with daylight arriving sooner, your natural rhythms can shift out of sync. That’s why some people find themselves waking earlier than they’d like, lying awake longer at night, or feeling sluggish during the day.
Birdsong might sound lovely at 5 a.m., but it’s not so welcome if it robs you of another hour of rest. And while lighter evenings can be energising, they can also make it harder for your brain to wind down for sleep. Speaking with a sleep specialist can help you understand why these seasonal changes affect your body so strongly and what simple adjustments can make the biggest difference.
So what can you do?
- Manage light exposure: If early morning light wakes you too soon, consider blackout blinds or an eye mask. If you wake too early, stay in bed in the dark to help adjust your sleep timing. Be patient…it can take a few days, at the very least. On the other hand, step outside in the morning when you wake up to anchor your body clock with natural light.
- Maintain a steady routine: Consistent bedtimes and wake times help stabilize your sleep pattern, even as the seasons shift.
- Wind down mindfully: Lighter evenings can trick you into staying “switched on” later. Protect your wind-down time and create a clear signal for your body that sleep is coming. This is when you should dim lights, close blinds, and help your body prepare for sleep, just like you would in a gentle sleep school environment designed to support healthy rest.
Spring is a season of change and growth. By being aware of how these lighter mornings and chirping birds affect your sleep, you can make small adjustments to keep your rest on track—so you wake refreshed and ready to enjoy all the best this season brings.
